Dr. Mike Shreffler, Trustee 2020
I am humbled and honored to be appointed to serve as your Perry Township Trustee. I have lived in Perry Township for most of my life. My father was also born and raised in the township and his parents and grandparents had a strong presence here as well. Perry is a wonderful and unique place to live, work and play. We have so much to offer to our residents, our businesses and our visitors. I know first-hand as a former administrator for Perry Local Schools that our education is among the best in Ohio.
I have a strong background in education and community involvement that I believe will be an asset to our township. I received my Bachelor's degree in English from The Ohio State University and my MA in English from the University of Akron. For a short time, I moved to South Florida where I taught at a high school for a couple of years and then became the principal of a very diverse middle school in 2002. In 2002, I was elated when Perry offered me a position as Assistant High School Principal. I also served the district as Director of Curriculum and Instruction. For the past 11 years, I served as Superintendent of schools, briefly at Southeast Local in Wayne County and most recently at Northwest Local in Canal Fulton. I realized I wanted to dedicate more time to my community and for the past school year, I have been consulting for several area school districts.
I have also been involved in Perry Township and Stark County. I have worked on numerous levies and improvement projects. I am a graduate of Leadership Stark County and have served as chair of education day and on the education day committee for many years. I also have participated in many local state and national leadership trainings. Additionally, in 2010, I helped co-found Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach (ORMACO), a non-profit that focuses on making music, arts and culture accessible to all, with a focus on programming for underserved, disadvantaged and rural populations. Most importantly, I believe very strongly that proactive leadership is a vital part of a community's growth. As a servant leader, I am very excited to step into this role as Township Trustee to help and lead in any way I can. I extend congratulations to Craig Chessler who leaves the position to become the township fiscal officer. Craig served in this position for 30 years so I have big shoes to fill. Craig, Doug Haines and Ralph DeChiara established a strong board of trustees. The township has a wealth of knowledge in established and experienced Police, Fire, Road and Zoning heads and a veteran and active township administrator. We have a strong group of dedicated men and women who work for the township on a full or part time basis. Additionally, the backbone of Perry Township is all our tremendous residents who proudly call it home.
Please do not hesitate to call on me at any time to talk about ways that we can grow and strive here in Perry Township. Feel free to approach me in the community and introduce yourself and share thoughts. Our township, state and world have some strong challenges in the days ahead. I have no doubt that we will work together to continue to be one of the best communities to call home.
